Thunder on the Plains: The Story of the American Buffalo

When the first Europeans came to America, the great plains were filled with American bison, also called buffalo. The great southern buffalo herd was so large it could take days for them all to thunder by. But by 1900, they were almost all gone. What happened? Sadly, people happened; settlers turned the prairies into farms, and shot lots of buffalo for sport, or to hurt Native Americans who depended on the buffalo for food and many other things. This is a great book with lots of interesting pictures, a mix of drawings and historical photographs. Parts of this story might make you sad, or mad, but the end is happier. They didn't go extinct, and people are now helping buffalo herds to thunder over the plains again.
