The Tree of Life

A book depicting the life of Charles Darwin, Naturalist, Geologist, & Thinker
Charles Darwin was a great naturalist who solved one of the most puzzling questions of science: why are there so many different kinds of animals, and how did they come to be? His great idea was evolution through natural selection, that if each individual animal is born slightly different, over time, the differences that help animals survive better will be passed on to more young, until eventually the species changes, or evolves. This is one of the all-time great ideas in science. But Darwin did not start out a great scientist. His father wanted him to be a doctor, and was disappointed that Darwin didn't like medical lectures, and instead spent all his time walking in the woods drawing insects. Then in 1831 Darwin got a job as a naturalist on the Beagle, a ship that was sailing around the world. The close observations Darwin made on this voyage of thousands of different creatures, particularly in the Galapagos Islands, helped him finally solve the puzzle of evolution. This book shows Darwin’s life like a scrapbook. You have to take some time on each page, being a close observer (like Darwin!) to see everything that’s there. Around the edges and in the picture there are also real bits from Darwin's letters and diaries, so you can hear him in his own words. I think Darwin would like this book; you feel like you really know him by the end.
