Ship

by David Macaulay (Houghton-Mifflin, 1993)
Ship by David Macaulay

Divers off an island in the Bahamas discover the wreck of a 15th century Spanish ship in the sand. What is her story? How did she get here? This book tells about the wreck being discovered and excavated, and then it switches to the story of the ship itself, how it was built, loaded up, and sailed off to America. The ship in this story is actually made up, but it's based on several real ones, and all the history and archaeology are real, even if the ship isn't. Macaulay's drawings are very excellent, as always (as you will know if you have his book The Way Things Work), and make everything clear. If you like to read about underwater archaology and old stories, this gives you both.
