Surtsey: The Newest Place on Earth

In 1963 a volcano erupted in the sea near Iceland to make a brand-new island, named Surtsey. Scientists were there to see it happen, and they wrote this book about it. You can see pictures of a real island being born, and the very first plants, animals, and sea life move in. The author also tells some Icelandic myths about a great fiery worm who circles the earth, like the undersea mountain range making Surtsey—but whether you prefer a giant fiery worm or plate tectonics, it's interesting to get to watch.
