Wangari’s Trees of Peace

This is the true story of Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan woman who started the Green Belt program to help ordinary people plant millions of trees all over Africa. When Wangari was little, there were lots of trees around, and she loves the beautiful land. Then she goes away to study, and when she comes back, Kenya is a very different place. People have cut down almost all the trees for firewood and to make farms, and Kenya is turning into a desert. So Wangari decided to plant some trees in her own yard, and in the parks, and along the street—and soon other women join in. If you are tired of reading gloomy books, and feel like there is too much wrong with the world for just one small person to fix, you'll like reading about Wangari; she is one person, and she fixed it. As she says, "People are fighting over water, over food…we plant the seeds of peace."
